Agriculture

Agriculture is the major industry of the Hallock area.  Farmers depend on Hallock and Hallock depends on farmers.  Located in the heart of the productive Red River Valley, farming and its related industries provide a large share of the employment and tax base for the community.

Wheat and barley are the major small grains grown.  Sugarbeets and sunflowers are specialty crops well suited for this area.  Hallock is conveniently located for marketing and processing of raw products.  Two large grain elevators have "unit trains" capabilities as well as sufficient storage space for the harvest.

Sugar beets are processed at an American Crystal Sugar Company plant locate din Drayton, North Dakota, about 20 miles southwest of Hallock.  This is one of five such processing plants located in the Red River Valley.

 

Location And Access To Large Cities:

Hallock is located in the northwestern corner of Minnesota, twenty miles south of the Canadian border and ten miles east of North Dakota.  The Red River Valley of the North forms the state border.

  • U.S. Hwy 75 & MN Hwy 175 intersect at Hallock

  • Burlington Northern Railroad's main north-south line runs through Hallock and connects with the Canadian National Railway at the international boundary.

Retail trades, construction, education, public administration, health services and manufacturing of durable and nondurable goods make up the bulk of the current labor classifications.

 

Fire And Police Protection

Hallock has a volunteer fire department with 28 fully trained members and a full complement of the latest in fire fighting equipment and vehicles.

The police department consists of two full time officers providing 24-hour protection.  The county sheriff's department, located at the courthouse in Hallock, employs five full-time officers and a 24-hour dispatching service among state and local law enforcement personnel.

The communications system employs the latest in 911 emergency technology for the reporting of all police, medical and fire emergencies.

 

Communications

Cable television is provided to the city with 20 channels currently available including satellite reception and subscription channels.

The city is served by a weekly community newspaper, the 108 year old Kittson County Enterprise.  Two metropolitan dailies, the Grand Forks Herald and Minneapolis Star Tribune are sold at newsstands.  The Herald is also home delivered.

GTE provides phone service to the residents of the city.

    water per day from a vast underground aquafier.  The present 
    capacity is two million gallons per day and can be increased if
